Read a report

Interpret URL, HTTP, container, and stream information.

URL and HTTP sections

The report identifies host, protocol, port, path, extension, query, and fragment. HTTP details include status, final URL, redirects, reported size, content type, timing, and available headers.

The HTTP check starts with HEAD. For 405 or 501, it tries a range GET and closes that HTTP body without consuming the whole file. FFmpeg's later inspection can still perform its own network reads.

Query parameters stay intact; fragments are removed before FFmpeg opens the URL. Signed URLs may expire during inspection. Get a fresh URL when authorized and remove signed query parameters before sharing a report.

Media sections

SectionExample fields
ContainerFormat, duration, bitrate, size, chapters
VideoResolution, frame rates, pixel format, bit depth, color, rotation
AudioSample rate, channel layout, sample format, reported bit depth
Other streamsAdditional audio, subtitles, metadata

The report can include every stream. Dimensions describe stored pixels before rotation. Average and nominal frame rates are separate properties.

Missing and estimated values

Missing fields print Unknown. Calculated frame counts are marked estimated. Sizes use MiB; bitrates use kb/s. A live stream without a duration is not necessarily empty.

An extension is a hint; FFmpeg reads the content. Successful metadata inspection does not prove every frame decodes or that the file is safe in another application.

Timeouts apply to individual operations, not a guaranteed total analysis deadline. See the project README for implementation details.
